The best TrainingPeaks alternative when you train without a coach

TrainingPeaks is still the platform of choice for working with a coach. Train on your own, though, and you pay for Premium to get a calendar you have to fill and fix yourself. Here is what TrainingPeaks does well, what it really costs as of November 2026, where it falls short for self-coached triathletes, the best alternatives and how to move to Intervals.icu and TriCoach AI without losing your history.

    What TrainingPeaks does really well

TrainingPeaks is first and foremost a coach-athlete platform. Your coach plans sessions on your calendar, you train, your watch uploads the activity and you talk it through in one place. A coach can even plan for an athlete on a free account.

It is also a marketplace of coach-written plans you buy one at a time, plus a solid analytics tool: fitness, fatigue and form tracking, peak performances and strength tools. On the device side, TrainingPeaks connects to Garmin, Coros, Apple Watch, Suunto, Polar, Wahoo, Zwift and more.

    • The industry standard for triathlon and endurance coaches
    • Plans from established coaches by distance and level
    • Some of the broadest device compatibility out there

TrainingPeaks price: free vs Premium in 2026

The Basic account is free: you can log workouts, set goals and follow a coach or a plan. What you can't do is plan future workouts, drag and drop them, or see the Performance Management Chart (fitness, fatigue, form).

Premium costs $19.95 a month or $134.99 a year, about $11.25 a month, according to the official pricing page as of November 2026, with a 14-day trial. It covers syncing planned workouts to your device plus planning and analysis tools. Plans and coaching cost extra: TrainingPeaks offers coached tiers from $149 to $359 a month, Premium included.

    • Basic: free, training log, follow a coach or a plan
    • Premium: $19.95 a month or $134.99 a year
    • Training plans: bought separately from coaches
    • TrainingPeaks coaching: $149 to $359 a month

Where TrainingPeaks falls short for self-coached triathletes

Without a coach, TrainingPeaks hands you great tools and leaves you in the driver's seat. A purchased plan is applied to your calendar between a start and end date. When your week goes sideways, you move workouts yourself (a Premium feature) or remove the plan and reapply it to new dates.

Then there is the learning curve. CTL, ATL, TSB, TSS: powerful metrics, but only if you know how to read them. Plenty of age groupers pay for Premium to stare at charts when all they really wanted was to know what to do on Tuesday.

    • Paid Premium just to plan ahead, even without a coach
    • Purchased plans you adjust by hand when life happens
    • Rich metrics with a real learning curve

    Intervals.icu: TrainingPeaks-style analytics, for free

Intervals.icu covers the core of TrainingPeaks analytics: load, fitness and fatigue across swim, bike and run, per-sport zones, a calendar and planned workouts pushed to your watch. It is free, with an optional Supporter subscription. The catch: like TrainingPeaks without a coach, it won't write your plan.

TriCoach AI: an AI coach plugged into Intervals.icu

TriCoach AI fills that gap. Tristan, the AI coach, maps your season (base, build, peak and taper toward your A, B and C races), writes your swim, bike, run and strength sessions every week and pushes them to your Intervals.icu calendar, which sends them on to Garmin, Zwift, Wahoo or Coros. Ask for a change in plain English and it adapts, without letting you slide into overtraining. Price: CA$19.99 a month, 14-day free trial with no credit card. Limits: no human coach, and no direct Garmin, Strava or Apple integration (everything runs through Intervals.icu).

    TriDot: highly structured triathlon AI

TriDot adapts sessions to your fitness and environment (elevation, heat, humidity) and works with Garmin, Apple Watch, Coros and Wahoo. Pricing as of November 2026: $14.99 a month for one sprint or Olympic race, $39 for up to 3 races of any distance, $99 for Complete, with a 14-day trial and no card. Read our TriDot review.

MOTTIV: a personalized plan with a free tier

MOTTIV builds a plan from your races, available time and current fitness, with strength and nutrition included. Free tier, then Premium at $19.99 a month or $179.99 a year as of November 2026. Heads up: watch connections, Garmin included, are Premium only.

Switch without losing your training history

Your activities come from your watch, not from TrainingPeaks, so you can pull them straight from the source. Setup is quick, but importing a long history can take several hours in the background.

Moving from TrainingPeaks to Intervals.icu + TriCoach AI, step by step

Step 1: create a free Intervals.icu account and, in settings, connect your main source (Garmin Connect, Coros, Wahoo or Strava). New activities flow in automatically. Keep one source per device to avoid duplicates, as the official Intervals.icu FAQ recommends.

Step 2: bring your history over. Garmin limits how far back the connection reaches, so request a full export of your data from your Garmin account, copy the download link from Garmin's email and paste it into Intervals.icu's "Import All Garmin Data" option (don't upload the ZIP file). On the Strava side, history is limited for non-Supporter accounts: the FAQ suggests requesting your archive from Strava and importing it.

Step 3: enter your thresholds per sport (power, pace, heart rate) in Intervals.icu and turn on planned workout uploads to your watch. Need a refresher? Check our heart rate zones guide and our Garmin triathlon training plan guide.

Step 4: open TriCoach AI, start the free trial, click "Connect Intervals.icu" and approve access. Enter your race, availability and level: Tristan builds your season and first week right in your calendar.

Step 5: once that first week has synced to your watch, cancel TrainingPeaks Premium if you no longer need it. The Basic account stays free, so there is no need to delete it.

TrainingPeaks or an alternative: which one fits?

Stick with TrainingPeaks if you work with a human coach: that is its home turf, and your coach probably uses it already. If you train on your own, pairing Intervals.icu with an AI coach gets you analytics plus a plan that adjusts every week, for roughly what Premium alone costs. Want a fixed, free framework instead? Grab one of our triathlon training plans, like the half Ironman plan.

    • You have a human coach: TrainingPeaks
