Embrunman race guide: course, swim, bike and run breakdown

Aerial view of Lake Serre-Ponçon and the Alpine peaks around Embrun, setting of the Embrunman triathlon

Embrunman is unanimously considered Europe's, and arguably the world's, hardest long-distance triathlon outside of Ironman format. 3.8 km mountain-lake swim, 188 km of bike including Izoard and Granon (5,000 m elevation), then a hilly marathon. Reserved for hardcore long-distance AND mountain enthusiasts.

    Serre-Ponçon lake swim (3.8 km)

Early start (5 AM) on Embrun's water body, Lake Serre-Ponçon. Cold water (17-20°C in August), wetsuit mandatory. Pitch black at start, headlamps on the buoys.

Often the most mentally demanding swim on the circuit: cold, nighttime, at altitude (780 m). Open-water preparation essential.

    • Full wetsuit mandatory
    • Cold-water training in pool or lake
    • Time acclimation (5 AM start)

Galibier and Izoard bike (188 km, ~5,000 m elevation)

The Embrunman bike is legendary: Izoard pass (2,360 m), climb to Granon, descent to Briançon, then return via rolling roads. 5,000 m of elevation make it one of the hardest bikes in world triathlon.

Strategy: ultra-conservative pacing on Izoard. Many athletes ride 6-7h. The run must follow, so finishing this bike in strict Z2 is non-negotiable.

    • Specific col work 2-3×/wk in specific phase
    • 150-180 km simulations with 3,000+ m elevation
    • Compact or triple chainring mandatory (34-32 min)
    • Very high-volume fueling (90-100 g/h over 7-8h)

    Hilly marathon (42.2 km, ~500 m elevation)

Loop marathon around Embrun, with constant surges and a few steep hills. Not flat at all. Often run in high heat as mountain afternoons are intense.

Strategy: run by HR, not pace. Accept walking steep hills. Strict hydration and fueling.

    • Regular hilly running test in prep
    • Heat acclimation (possible heatwave mid-August)
    • Planned walk-run strategy on hills

    Strategy: finishing first

Embrunman isn't raced for the chrono: it's raced to finish. DNF rate is among the highest on the circuit, especially in heat.

First-timer goal: finish within the cutoff (15h). Ultra-conservative pacing on everything, impeccable fueling, steel mindset over 12-14h.

    Logistics: high Alps

Arrive 5-7 days before to acclimate to altitude (Embrun = 780 m) and test gear on cols. Town lodging or camping, very limited spots.

Mid-August weather: 28-35°C in valleys, 15-20°C on cols. Very adaptable bike kit, multiple layers.
