    Moderate (flat course, moderate heat)

    Allier lake swim (3.8 km)

Open-water start in Lake Allier, water typically 20-22°C in late August. Wetsuit usually allowed. Calm water, easy sighting.

Wave / rolling start, much less violent than a mass start. Ideal for first-timers.

    • Wetsuit usually allowed
    • Open-water training 2-3 simulations
    • Sighting technique work recommended

Flat fast bike (180 km, ~800 m elevation)

Loops in the Bourbonnais countryside. Nearly flat, a few short rollers but no significant climb. Possible wind but not systematic.

Strategy: hold a constant power (low sweet spot for first-timers, low threshold for advanced). The flat course invites pushing, but the marathon is coming...

    • Constant aero position (tri bike recommended)
    • Power meter strongly advised
    • Long rides 5-6h at target pace in simulation
    • Test aero position over 4-5h pain-free

    Flat urban marathon (42.2 km)

4 loops in Vichy center and Parc des Sources. Flat course, shaded sections, family atmosphere. Crowds across all 4 loops.

Ideal conditions to target a chrono: no elevation, moderate freshness late August.

    • Run fueling: 60-80 g carbs/h
    • Hydration strategy: 600-800 ml/h
    • Target pace validated on 2-3 marathon long runs in prep

Strategy: don't get fooled by the flat

Vichy's trap: the flat bike invites pushing harder than planned. Many athletes finish the bike too well... and walk mid-marathon.

Absolute power discipline on the bike (high Z2 for first-timers, sweet spot for advanced). The reward: a marathon run, not walked.

    Logistics: accessible and organized

Vichy is very accessible by train (3h from Paris). Plenty of accommodation in town. 2-3 days before is enough.

Late-August weather: 18-26°C, sometimes warmer. Raincoat useful (possible thunderstorms).
