Ironman Nice race guide: course, swim, bike and run breakdown

Aerial view of the Promenade des Anglais and the bay of Nice, Ironman Nice race course

Ironman Nice has become the brand's European flagship, host of the men's Ironman World Championship in 2023 and 2025. A beautiful but demanding race: Mediterranean swim, a bike course that climbs seriously into the hinterland, and a flat marathon on the Promenade des Anglais. Here's how to prepare each segment.

    Mediterranean swim (3.8 km)

Start from Centenaire beach, open water. Water typically 21 to 24°C in June/September, wetsuit allowed most years. Moderate to sometimes strong swell when the Mistral blows.

Out-and-back course with spaced buoys. The hardest part isn't distance but the mass start (1500+ athletes) requiring you to hold your line through the first 200 m scrum.

    • Wetsuit almost always allowed
    • Sighting (lifting the head) work essential
    • 3-4 open-water simulations before the race

    Hinterland bike (180 km, ~2,400 m elevation)

This is THE segment that defines Nice. The course leaves the sea early and climbs hard toward col de Vence, col Saint-Roch and col de Châteauneuf, with technical descents that demand experience.

Strategy: do NOT spend everything on the first climbs. Many athletes blow up mid-bike. Ideal pacing is just below aerobic threshold on climbs, managing descents to spare the legs.

    • 2 hill rides per week in specific phase
    • 120-160 km simulations with 1,500 m elevation minimum
    • Technical descent work: brake before the corner, keep eyes long
    • Power meter strongly recommended to manage effort

Flat marathon on Promenade des Anglais (42.2 km)

4 loops on the Promenade. Nearly flat course, but often high heat (25-30°C) making thermal management critical. Massive crowds across 4 loops, a huge mental boost.

Strategy: start conservative for the first 10 km. The freshness after the hilly bike is misleading, the wall arrives fast at km 25-30 if you went too hard early.

    • Ice on the neck at each aid station in heat
    • Fueling: 60-80 g carbs/h, high sodium
    • Practice a hot-conditions marathon in prep if possible

    Pacing strategy

Classic Nice trap: getting passed early on the bike and trying to follow. Hold YOUR target power (typically 65-72% FTP for first-timers, 72-78% for advanced) no matter what.

On the run, negative-splitting the marathon (second half faster than first) is the highest-paying strategy. Start at marathon pace + 15-20 sec/km, then progressively bring it down to target.

    Logistics and practical tips

Arrive ideally 4-5 days before the race to recover from travel and ride 1-2 course recons. Book accommodation very early, the event saturates the city.

Weather: June = 22-27°C, September = 24-30°C, sometimes more. Mistral wind unpredictable in June. Bike kit adapted to both scenarios (windbreaker for descents).
