Aerial view of Ottawa, the Ottawa River and Parliament Hill, setting of Ironman Canada-Ottawa

Ironman Canada-Ottawa brings the full distance back to the Canadian capital on August 2, 2026. Urban, patriotic setting: swim in the Ottawa River from Britannia Park, bike entirely closed to traffic on the National Capital Commission parkways, and a marathon finishing in front of Parliament Hill. A flat, fast course, accessible to first-time finishers and chrono hunters alike. Here's how to prepare each segment.

    Difficulty
    Moderate (flat and fast course)

    Ottawa River swim (3.8 km)

Two loops in the Ottawa River, starting from Britannia Park, west of the city. Water around 21 °C in early August, wetsuit allowed as long as the water stays below 24.5 °C. Rolling start, far less brutal than a mass start, ideal for a first-timer.

Slight current possible depending on the section, otherwise relatively calm water. Banks and bridges offer good landmarks for sighting.

    • Wetsuit usually allowed (water ~21 °C)
    • Open-water training 2 to 3 times in simulation
    • Practice sighting on bank landmarks

Flat and fast bike on closed parkways (180 km)

Course of 2.75 loops on parkways entirely closed to traffic, along the Ottawa River, with a stretch on the Hull (Gatineau) side and along the Rideau Canal on Colonel By Drive. Smooth surface, low elevation gain (around 320 m), a few gentle surges: one of the fastest Ironman courses out there.

Strategy: the flat course invites you to push, but the marathon is coming. Hold steady power (low sweet spot for a first-timer, low threshold for an advanced athlete) and don't get carried away by the speed early in the bike.

    • Steady aero position (a tri bike pays off here)
    • Power meter strongly advised on a flat course
    • Long rides of 5 to 6 h at target pace in simulation
    • Test the aero position over 4 to 5 h without pain

Urban marathon to Parliament (42.2 km)

Two-loop marathon starting at the foot of Parliament Hill, along Queen Elizabeth Driveway, around Dow's Lake and through the Central Experimental Farm, with sections along the Rideau Canal. Flat, urban course, crowds present, finish in front of Parliament.

Strategy: ideal conditions for a strong chrono. Start controlled on the first loop, manage hydration (August heat can rise), then settle into target pace on the second.

    • Fueling: 60 to 80 g carbs per hour
    • Hydration 600 to 800 ml per hour, more in heat
    • Target pace validated on 2 to 3 marathon-length long runs in prep

    Pacing strategy

The Ottawa trap, like any flat and fast course: finishing the bike too hard. Many athletes come off the bike euphoric and walk by mid-marathon. Discipline on bike power is the key to a strong chrono.

On the run, the flat course lets you negative-split the marathon. Start cautiously and progressively bring it back to target pace, keeping a margin for the second loop.

    Logistics and practical tips

Ottawa is very accessible (international airport, train) and the city is compact and well served. Transition and finish are in the heart of downtown, which simplifies logistics. As a highly anticipated new race, booking lodging early remains wise.

Early August weather: hot and sometimes humid during the day. Plan thermal management on the marathon (ice, cap) and lightweight bike kit.
